Hibiscus sabdariffa (Sorrel of Guinea or Roselle) is an herbaceous shrub of the Malvaceae family.Hibiscus has been cultivated in Egypt and Southeast Asia for their edible fruits and for ornamental purpose.It produces large, colorful flowers with long pistils, which only last a day. Manual harvesting of the sepals, is organized during the carpophore period, between November and April.
Red flowers, dried and infused, are used for the preparation of karkade, the traditional beverage consumed very fresh in West Africa. It is also valued for many food applications thanks to its polyphenols content that offers antioxidant benefits.
