At Fi Europe 2024, dsm-firmenich will be among the first cohort of pet nutrition companies contributing to the event’s first ever Petfood Suppliers Hub. At the show, the company will showcase Veramaris® Pets, the world’s most potent source of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) for our furry companions.
EPA and DHA are two essential omega-3 fatty acids bringing a wide range of benefits to our pets, including brain, eye, heart, immune and joint health. While these nutrients are traditionally derived from fish oil and meal, the dsm-firmenich team has developed an innovative approach that enables production of these omega-3s from marine microalgae, grown in closed fermentation tanks on land. The result is a potent, natural and reliable product, delivering 60% EPA and DHA content without impacting marine ecosystems.
For each tonne of Veramaris® Pets produced, we save approximately 66 tonnes of wild-caught fish – equivalent to around 1.2 million anchovies. By cultivating EPA and DHA this way, Veramaris® Pets appeals to the 70% of global pet owners who say they are “worried about climate change” and “trying to have a positive impact on the environment” through their everyday actions.
Veramaris® Pets is not only sustainable but also offers high bioavailability, meaning pets can easily absorb and benefit from the omega-3s. Suitable for cats and dogs at all life stages, the product is also free from ocean-born contaminants such as heavy metals, and the all-important final purification step removes any unpleasant sensory notes, meaning it can be easily incorporated into pet food formulations without impacting taste.
