Syensqo expands natural flavours range to support industry’s ingredient challenges
1 Oct 2024As consumers search for healthy, safe, and great tasting food, manufacturers require a wider choice of high-performing natural ingredients. Discover how Syensqo, previously part of the Solvay Group, is contributing to this effort.
As consumers increasingly search for great tasting food that is healthy and safe, manufacturers need a wider choice of high performing natural ingredients to push technical boundaries.
Syensqo, previously part of Solvay Group, has been a global leader in vanillin and ethylvanillin for more than a century. As part of its mission to deliver more natural solutions, Syensqo is adapting its historical food & beverage flavours portfolio towards more natural ingredients such as natural vanillin from rice bran oil by-product, and is expanding into the growing segment of natural preservatives, with rosemary-based flavours and antioxidants.
There is increasing demand for food that meets clean label, low-fat, low-sugar diets without compromising on flavours that excite the taste buds. However, the convenience and affordability of such high-end products remain key criteria for most consumers, especially in today’s challenging economic situation. Fortunately, flavours can play an active role in combining taste, performance, and affordability to support the industry in matching consumer expectations.
A versatile natural vanillin range from rice bran oil by-product
Vanilla is a taste reminiscent of childhood, and an important flavour for the F&B industry. To satisfy the increasing global demand for this highly favoured flavour, ingredient suppliers have developed several types of vanillin, the main organoleptic aroma component, to meet different flavour labelling requirements, such as synthetic – or, more recently, natural – to align with the natural ingredient consumer trend.
As part of its commitment to driving natural ingredient innovation, Syensqo has developed RhovanilⓇ Natural, a natural vanillin obtained by the fermentation of a non-GMO rice bran oil by-product. The RhovanilⓇ Natural range fully complies with stringent EU natural substance regulations. It is also a sustainable, circular solution as it is obtained by valorising a side product that comes from the rice cultivation process for human consumption. Therefore, by using RhovanilⓇ Natural, brand owners in the chocolate, confectionery, bakery, and nutrition sectors can easily switch their portfolio to clean label vanillin.
Additionally, vanillin's unique properties can help manufacturers tackle some critical application-related challenges such as masking off-notes in high-protein nutritional foodstuffs, and balance the overall taste in dark chocolate. Vanillin’s sweet, creamy, and unique processing and technical characteristics can also be used as a global taste booster in bakery.
A new range of natural rosemary-based flavours and antioxidants
Efficient food processing technologies are key in preventing food waste and preservatives play an important role in inhibiting the growth of microorganisms to extend the shelf-life of food. However, as with all F&B segments, there is an increasing demand for natural solutions. Therefore, natural preservatives are a growing segment, and rosemary extract is a key natural product for food preservation, shelf-life extension, together with colour and flavour stabilisation benefits.
Rosemary is a much appreciated and versatile aromatic herb, which in addition to being used as a food flavouring, has powerful antioxidant activity. Syensqo has recently enriched its portfolio with Riza, a range of 100% natural plant-based, non-GMO antioxidants and flavours based on rosemary extract to replace chemical food additives and align with the consumer demand for more natural ingredients. This range of antioxidant and natural flavours, ethically-sourced from wild rosemary in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, can support both the sweet and savory segments with their shelf-life challenges, as well as colour and taste stability. Thanks to the ideal sourcing location, Syensqo offers a reliable supply, reducing supply chain risks.
Combining natural ingredients with strong performance
Syensqo sets the industry standard with high-performance products that excel in purity, traceability, transparency, and compliance with stringent food regulations, and strongly believes that conscious consumption is no longer a trend, but the “foundation for growth”. By incorporating sustainability into every business decision-making process, Syensqo’s cutting-edge solutions are consistently environmentally responsible, designed to benefit people and the planet, and match consumer preferences with a balance of natural, sustainable, and efficient ingredient solutions.
