13 Oct 2023

Fazer is introducing new product Oat Protein SGen to Foodtech oats portfolio, demonstrating commitment to sustainability and continuous innovation that meets expectations of modern consumers.

The modern consumer is increasingly adopting plant-based foods and protein alternatives for a multitude of reasons. The growing popularity of plant-based proteins can be attributed to various factors, including ethical and sustainable consumption, taste preferences, and health considerations. Plant-based protein foods offer several enhanced nutritional benefits to vegan and vegetarian diets and have gained popularity also among the flexitarian community, which seeks healthy options while reducing meat consumption without compromising on the taste and texture of protein-rich foods.

Fazer is expanding its Foodtech functional oat ingredients portfolio by introducing new product Oat Protein SGen. It showcases our commitment to sustainability and continuous innovation, offering high-quality products that cater to the diverse needs of modern customers.

Foodtech oat ingredients offering includes beta glucans, proteins, flours, and oat oil for healthy living and beauty, solutions for active lifestyle food, nutrition, and cosmetic regimes.

What is Oat Protein SGen?

Oat Protein SGen is a next-generation sustainable protein derived from Nordic oats. It is manufactured from oat okara, a by-product of the plant drinks process, which helps reduce food loss while reinforcing nutrition in our diets. This upcycled plant protein is rich in essential nutrients and compounds that unlock its potential to offer several health benefits.

Oat Protein SGen contains protein, fibre, and phytochemicals such as avenanthramides, which are unique to oats. Oat Protein SGen is recognized for its numerous nutritional and health benefits, including the role of proteins and carbohydrates in supporting muscle growth and recovery.1-2 It is also generally considered well digestible due to the presence of oat fibre, which feeds gut microbiota and may aid in maintaining regular gut function.3 Oat avenanthramides have shown beneficial effects on cardiovascular health and muscle recovery.4-7 Additionally, Fazer Oat Protein SGen is low in saturated fat and sodium.

Oat Protein SGen is an excellent source of various vitamins and minerals, particularly high in iron and zinc, which are limiting nutrients in plant-based diets.8 Adding Oat Protein S Gen products to our everyday diet would be an effective way to increase iron intake, especially for young children, adolescents, and young women who are most vulnerable to low iron status.9-11

Why choose Oat Protein SGen?

Oat Protein SGen meets well the recommended amino-acid composition as lysine is the only limiting essential amino-acid in oats12. Generally, when oat proteins are combined with pulse proteins, the amino acids profile can be complemented and, thus, offer a nutritionally complete plant protein source that increases the nutritional value of vegan and flexitarian diets.

As more consumers embrace plant-based diets for responsible and healthy eating, they may encounter hurdles related to off-taste and impaired digestibility that are commonly associated with some of plant-proteins. Oat Protein SGen may help overcome these hurdles as it has a mild flavour and does not contain poorly digestible FODMAP* carbohydrates, which are often considered to upset digestion.

Additionally, choosing a nutritious upcycled plant protein ingredient is an important purchase decision driver for environmentally responsible consumers with sustainable lifestyles.

Oat Protein SGen can be used in multiple food applications, such as plant-based food, meat analogue and dairy alternatives, healthy food, and snacks like energy bars, breakfast cereals and sport nutrition, protein powders and meal replacers.

Plant-based technology

As the leading oat miller in Finland and Sweden, Fazer Mills are surrounded by Nordic oat fields, producing products from a truly local crop. Fazer is working to make farming in the region more environmentally friendly by developing sustainable grain farming practices in cooperation with value chain stakeholders. Its goals include reducing eutrophication, protecting biodiversity, and minimizing the use of pesticides and fertilisers. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, the company uses every part of the oat during the production process, thereby reducing food waste. Thanks to its expertise in plant-based food production and innovative technology, Fazer is committed to creating solutions for people’s health for future generations.
